The Moonlight Garden of the Mughal Empire

A garden bathed in moonlight

Discover
Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh, literally translating to "Moonlight Garden," is a charbagh complex in Agra, situated directly north of the Taj Mahal on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River. This exquisite garden, measuring approximately 300 by 300 metres, is perfectly aligned with the Taj Mahal and was originally built by Emperor Babur as the last in a series of eleven pleasure gardens along the river.

Rediscovered and restored by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the 1990s, Mehtab Bagh has become one of Agra's most cherished destinations. It offers an unobstructed, breathtaking panoramic view of the Taj Mahal across the river — making it the most sought-after spot for sunset photography and a peaceful escape from the crowds at the Taj Mahal complex itself.

MUGHAL CHAR BAGH DESIGN

Mehtab Bagh follows the classic Mughal Char Bagh (four-quartered garden) design, with the garden divided into four quadrants by walkways and water channels. The 300-metre square complex features a large octagonal pool at its centre, sandstone pavilions, and aqueducts that once carried water from the river. Originally built by Emperor Babur around 1530 CE, it was later significantly developed by Emperor Shah Jahan as a pleasure garden to enjoy moonlit views of the Taj Mahal.

THE PERFECT TAJ MAHAL VIEWPOINT

Mehtab Bagh is widely regarded as the finest vantage point for viewing and photographing the Taj Mahal. From this garden, visitors can witness the iconic monument change colours throughout the day — from soft pink at sunrise to brilliant white at noon and warm golden hues at sunset. The unobstructed view across the Yamuna River, with the Taj Mahal's perfect reflection in the water on calm days, creates one of the most photographed scenes in all of India. It was from this very spot that Shah Jahan is believed to have admired his creation.

Through the ages

History of
Mehtab Bagh

From its origins as a Mughal pleasure garden in the 16th century to its modern restoration, Mehtab Bagh has witnessed centuries of history along the banks of the Yamuna River.

Mehtab Bagh origins under Emperor Babur

c. 1530

Emperor Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, establishes Mehtab Bagh as the last in a series of eleven pleasure gardens on the banks of the Yamuna River. The garden follows the traditional Persian Char Bagh layout with symmetrical quadrants.

Shah Jahan develops Mehtab Bagh

1631–1653

Emperor Shah Jahan significantly develops and enhances Mehtab Bagh during the construction of the Taj Mahal. The garden is perfectly aligned with the Taj Mahal across the river, serving as a moonlit viewing point. Legend suggests Shah Jahan planned a "Black Taj Mahal" here, though historians now dispute this claim.

Mehtab Bagh falls into disrepair

18th–19th Century

Following the decline of the Mughal Empire, Mehtab Bagh falls into severe disrepair. Repeated flooding from the Yamuna River damages the garden's structures, water channels, and pavilions. The site becomes overgrown and largely forgotten, buried under layers of silt and vegetation.

ASI restoration of Mehtab Bagh

1994–2003

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertakes a major excavation and restoration project. Archaeologists uncover the original garden layout, the large octagonal pool, walkways, and pavilion foundations. The "Black Taj" myth is debunked when excavations reveal only garden structures, not a second mausoleum.
