The Moonlight Garden of the Mughal Empire
A garden bathed in moonlight
Mehtab Bagh, literally translating to "Moonlight Garden," is a charbagh complex in Agra, situated directly north of the Taj Mahal on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River. This exquisite garden, measuring approximately 300 by 300 metres, is perfectly aligned with the Taj Mahal and was originally built by Emperor Babur as the last in a series of eleven pleasure gardens along the river.
Rediscovered and restored by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the 1990s, Mehtab Bagh has become one of Agra's most cherished destinations. It offers an unobstructed, breathtaking panoramic view of the Taj Mahal across the river — making it the most sought-after spot for sunset photography and a peaceful escape from the crowds at the Taj Mahal complex itself.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Mehtab Bagh follows the classic Mughal Char Bagh (four-quartered garden) design, with the garden divided into four quadrants by walkways and water channels. The 300-metre square complex features a large octagonal pool at its centre, sandstone pavilions, and aqueducts that once carried water from the river. Originally built by Emperor Babur around 1530 CE, it was later significantly developed by Emperor Shah Jahan as a pleasure garden to enjoy moonlit views of the Taj Mahal.
Mehtab Bagh is widely regarded as the finest vantage point for viewing and photographing the Taj Mahal. From this garden, visitors can witness the iconic monument change colours throughout the day — from soft pink at sunrise to brilliant white at noon and warm golden hues at sunset. The unobstructed view across the Yamuna River, with the Taj Mahal's perfect reflection in the water on calm days, creates one of the most photographed scenes in all of India. It was from this very spot that Shah Jahan is believed to have admired his creation.
Through the ages
From its origins as a Mughal pleasure garden in the 16th century to its modern restoration, Mehtab Bagh has witnessed centuries of history along the banks of the Yamuna River.
Explore & experience
Capture the most iconic sunset view of the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh. As the sun dips below the horizon, the Taj glows in warm golden and pink hues — a photographer's paradise with no obstructions and stunning compositions.
Stroll through the beautifully restored Mughal Char Bagh garden, exploring the symmetrical pathways, ancient water channels, and the large octagonal pool at the centre. Discover the archaeological ruins of sandstone pavilions and aqueducts.
On calm days, the Yamuna River creates a stunning mirror reflection of the Taj Mahal. Early morning visits offer the best chance to capture this magical reflection, especially during the cooler months when the river is still and mist adds an ethereal quality.
The lush gardens and proximity to the Yamuna River make Mehtab Bagh an excellent spot for birdwatching. Spot egrets, kingfishers, parakeets, and migratory birds during the winter months. The peaceful environment attracts a rich variety of avian species.
Combine your Mehtab Bagh visit with the Taj Mahal, located just across the river. While there's no direct crossing, the Taj Mahal's East Gate is approximately 3 km by road. Many visitors plan a sunrise Taj Mahal visit followed by a sunset at Mehtab Bagh.
Mehtab Bagh's well-maintained lawns and serene atmosphere make it an ideal spot for a peaceful picnic. Enjoy the tranquil gardens away from the hustle of Agra city, with the magnificent Taj Mahal as your backdrop — a truly unforgettable experience.
